My primary creative focus has been on abstraction in the mediums of painting and sculpture. It is through the language of abstraction, that I have discovered the means for expressing my personal life journey. Working in an intuitive and expressionistic manner, I record my personal feelings and concerns in the spontaneity of the present moment. It is through abstraction, that I seek to balance the structural elements of order and chaos, the organic and the geometric, emotions with reason and meaning. I strive to combine diverse processes and styles into a balanced composition, which speaks to the viewer and encourages introspection and visual pleasure. My acrylic paintings and works on paper blend together the metaphorical and symbolic possibilities of organic and geometric forms, with the emotive qualities of layers of subdued color. The paintings are created on canvas and wood panels, often times with scraped surfaces, and scratched linear elements as well as abrasive textures. The traces of the spontaneous creative process are left behind to suggest a state of struggle, flux, and the passage of time. In this regard, my inspiration is the Japanese concept of wabi sabi, as well as the contemporary art of Gerhard Richter. Yet through the juxtaposition of such compositional elements, order and harmony remains. A sense of mystery and the mystical sublime comes to life, which makes the experience of my art deeply meaningful. |
